Words
of wisdom and inspiration by Paul Feain:
"I am an antiquarian bookseller not a collector. I started
buying books when I was a 14 year old boy and over the years it
developed from a serious interest into an obsession.. I was a taxi
driver and owned my own taxi but as the house filled with books
and I took more time out from cab driving to buy books I realized
that I should become a bookseller. That way I could satisfy my desire
to buy and collect books and make a living."
"It seems that I have a fascination with the written word
and the book and I see that it is important that there are a number
of individuals and institutions working on preserving the culture
of the written word and the book for future generations. It has
been suggested that I must have a regressive gene to allow so much
attention to old books to invade my life!"
"A collector must be comfortable with his book. He must appreciate
the object sitting on his shelf for years. I can enjoy the ownership
of a book just be looking at in on the shelf or even by knowing
that it sits comfortably on my bookshelf."
"Antiquarian books will continue to flourish for the same
reason that people have always purchased them. An antiquarian book
is an object of beauty and wonderment for many people and this will
continue. In fact people will have more space on their shelves for
old books because their lives will not be cluttered with the many
new books which we now purchase as most of these will not be published
in their present format. Many of the new books which will be published
in hard copy will be works of art and will be desirable objects.
I think that in the long run the e book revolution will lead to
more exciting books being published. They will be much better produced,
on better paper and more attention will be paid to the illustrations
and the bindings as the public will become less price sensitive
about these beautiful objects."
