Paul's Report on International Antiquarian Bookfair in Hong Kong 2010

The Fourth International Antiquarian Bookfair in Hong Kong was held in December 2010 at Number 1 Pacific Place and it was very successful.

Around the world we keep hearing stories of the great financioal crisis, the Euro Crisi, the overprinting of the US $ and other stories of doom and gloom.

However there was no evidence of any of this at the book fair.

There were forty one exhibitors from France, United Kingdom, USA, Australia, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, Italy, Spain, Sweden and of course Hong Kong. It was a true International gathering of Antiquarian Booksellers.

Over one thousand people attended the fair over the three day period. And these visitors showed their appreciation of the material on offer by opening their wallets and making purchases.

Many rare and beautiful historical books, documents, maps and posters were displayed for sale. There was a great variety of subjects covering all geographic areas of the world with a particular emphasis on Asia and more especially Hong Kong and China.

Many books and maps which are very scarce were displayed. The material was mostly from the West and in Western languages with the majority being in English but French and German language material was also available as were a smaller number of Chinese items.

Total sales at the fair exceeded $8,000,000. The most expensive item sold was a hand written letter from Chairman Mao. Decorative items such as posters and maps were popular as well as ancient books with colour plates, especially those with a Chinese theme.

The customers at the fair came from Mainland China, from Hong Kong and other parts of Asia as well as Australia and Europe. There was an equal mixture of both local and expatriate customers.

The fair was considered by most exhibitors to be very successful and many have already signed up to attend the event which will be held on the first week end of December 2011.

This spacious venue is well known among the locals and is one stop away from Admiralty Hong Kong.

Publicity

We have already started publicity.

After last year's success will conitinue the appointment of Sage Communications. Publicity will be aimed at Hong Kong residents both expatriate Westerners and the Asian community and will feature in advertising campaigns in the local media with publicity in the most prominent publications.

Booths

Standard booth ( 3m x 3m x 2.5m high ) will include:
1 x fascia board : Company name & Country location & Booth number
1 tall glass showcase - lockable with 50W halogen lights
9 meters of shelving
1 square 1m table & 2 chairs
Lighting - 2x long arm spotlights

Please note that each stand has three walls, that you are being provided with bookshelves and not movable book cases as is normal in most book fairs. The stands have one glass show case built and attached to the side wall. The lockable doors will open outwards into the aisles. The side walls will be blank and you may have things hanging from here. There will be picture wires available. You may use blue tac or similar things but no nails or pins.

Travel Visas

Generally speaking there are no visas required to visit Hong Kong. You should check with your government before you travel. If you wish to visit Mainland China before or after you will be required to have a visa.

Dinner

Dinner will be on Saturday night at Sai Kung prominade (New Territories). The restaurant is on the waterfront and is a favorite destination for locals and Mainland Chinese visitors.

This is one of the most fun eating places in the world. Diners select their own sea food from the tanks and tell how they want it prepared. The cost is usually less than $100 US per head.

We will hire a bus that will pick up exhibitors and their guests from the venue and drive about one hour to the restaurant. The bus will have two drop offs on the return, one in Kowloon and the other on Hong Kong Island.

Last year a few exhibitors meet at this location on Sunday night after the fair came and it was a fun and delicious experience. You will see a different side to Hong Kong. Exact costs to be announced later.

Monday Excursion - Lantau

For the first time we will be organizing a special tour of Lantau Island. This is an epic trip that includes travelling by ferry, taxi, cable car and train.

We catch a ferry from Hong Kong Island to Lantau Island. Wind our way to Lantau Peak where we will have lunch and see Tian Tan Buddha, the largest bronze statue of Buddha in the world. From there we will jump on the Ning Ping 360 sky way cable car to see some truly spectacular views of Hong Kong and surrounding waters. Next we jump on a train back to Central. This excursion is cheap and you will see an entirely different side to Hong Kong. Bycycle hire is available and a fun day is assured.

If you are staying another day or two or arriving early Macau is about a 1 hour trip away by ferry and it is a very interesting old city to visit.

Hong Kong is one of the best cities in the world for food and dining and for the adventurous you can try foods not available in the Western world.

Terms and Conditions

Security badges must be worn by all exhibitors and staff.

Clear plastic bags and security labels are being printed and all goods sold will be put in the bags and sealed. If items are too large then pick up will take place at the reception desk.

No one may close up early.

The only insurance provided by the organizers is any compulsory Hong Kong public liability cover. The organizers will not be held responsible for any loss or theft.

There will be a room set aside for storage of boxes.

Ellie Aroney will be responsible for the production of the catalogue and any questions should be directed to her. Each exhibitor will receive 3 copies & 10 tickets.

You can help us drum up interest for the book fair. Send us information on items which you want to highlight that might create interest! (300dpi high quality print jpeg images + information) Anything, Chinese, Oriental, something with an extraordinary price, or something super cheap that might have some local interest.

To meet press deadlines it is important that we receive this information no later than the 12th July.
