This year the fourth Hong Kong Antiquarian Bookfair will be held on Friday,
Saturday, Sunday 3rd, 4th and 5th of December at the Hong Kong Exhibition
Centre.
The fair is organized by Cornstalk Bookshop, Yushodo Bookshop from Tokyo
and Swindons Books of Hong Kong.
So far we have had a number of Australian exhibit and visit. The Australians
who have exhibited so far include: Cornstalk Bookshop, Kay Craddock, Asia
Book Room, Douglas Stewart, Rare and Fine Books, Hordern House, Nick Ingleton
and Barbara Hince.
Each year the fair has improved in attendance by the public and in takings.
Last year 17 of the exhibitors gave us an approximation of their sales
at the Hong Kong Antiquarian Book Fair 2009. The total approximated sales
of these 17 exhibitors was HK$3,247,500, which amounted to average sales
of HK$191,024 per exhibitor. In Australian dollars that translates to
total take of approximately $500,000 and average take of approximately
$30,000.
So if you can be an average bookseller it makes it a worth while venture.
The cost of exhibiting is $14,000 Hong Kong for a half booth and $25,000
Hong Kong for a full booth. Translated means $2150 for a half booth and
$3850 for a full booth. Other costs are airfares of about $1800, transport
of books $3000 and accommodation $1000 (good accommodation in Hong Kong
ranges from $120 to $500 Australian per night – I am a $120 a night
person). Total cost including all expenses for an Australian exhibitor
then becomes $9600 for a full booth or $7900 for a half booth.
Of course if you are smart and sharp you may be able to get better deals
with the airlines or use frequent flyer points or take smaller items and
bring all your items as personal luggage and make it a cheaper affair.
It is a very good chance to meet international colleagues, expand your
own market and gain valuable experience in antiquarian bookselling in
the international market
So far from the UK we have Quaritch, Maggs, Books of Asia, Lucius Books,
Allsworth Books, Barbara Grigor Taylor, Bernard Sharpiro, Sophie Schniedman,
Pablo Butcher, Jonkers and from Germany Manfred Nosbusch, from Netherlands
Leen Helmink, Frederick Muller, from France Oriens, from India Ash Indian
Booksellers, from Japan Yushodo, Agawatosho, Maruzen, Bondi Books (yes
that’s right there is a Bondi Books in Tokyo!), Asakuraya, from
USA 19th Century Rare Books, Antipodean, David Brass, Old Imprints, Justin
Schiller, Rob Rulon-Miller, from Hong Kong Wattis Fine Art, Indosiam Books,
Lok Man Rare Books, Picture This Gallery, from Taiwan Jiu Xiang Ju Books,
From Thailand Lowendahl Rare Books, and from mainland China Cathay Bookshop.
In previous years we have had customers from China, Japan, Korea, Thailand,
Taiwan, The Philippines, mainland China, Australia, New Zealand and other
countries. They have purchased all sorts of books – books on China
and Asia, antiquarian books in diverse fields, private press books, modern
first editions, etc. Some dealers have picked up customers as a result
of exhibiting in Hong Kong and all have had a very good time
