Dresser studied design and botany and became a lecturer of art botany. After travelleing to Japan and making his observations and sketches he wrote this comprehensive book. The book is divided in two parts. The first is a study of specific architectural buildings and their functions and roles in customs and traditions and the second is a detailed look at religion and symbology ways of manufacturing pottery, metal, lacquer and fabrics. Previous owners name "John Henry Spicer". Dresser and Spicer both attended the University of London in the 1880s.
